England on Four Wheels – Advice for Driving in England

If you really want to view the UK and everything it has to offer, the best way is by car. Driving through England means moving at your own speed and selecting your itinerary yourself. Your itinerary is for a journey from your cheap hotel deals in Brighton to England’s North East, and it could have your mouth watering. I’ve selected this trip due to the way the landscape shifts, from sea to sea and city to village.

Day One- Start in the south coastal city of Brighton. Brighton is a wonderful city with its Pavilion, showgrounds and pier. Leave the hotel one morning and head along the coast on the A27. An ideal area to stop to have lunch is Portsmouth, with its famous Spinnaker Tower along with all the fantastic eateries in Gunwharf Quays. Get back on the road and go on it until Southampton, after which you’ll change to the A36. The A36 can lead you up to the historic area of Salisbury, that has an incredible medieval castle.

Day Two- Exit Salisbury on the A360 and change to the A303. On this route you’ll be lead to the place everyone must see once, the strange and impressive Stonehenge. From here, you’ll go west, through Warminster, and head into Bath. Bath holds some of the remains of the Roman baths, consisting of England’s finest classical architecture. After this, take the A46 and A433 north and you’ll end up in the Cotswolds. Tetbury and Cirencester are a couple of towns that contain a lot of pleasant motels and budget hotel chains for the night’s rest.

3rd Day- Today, you’ll take a trip to Coventry. While you’re going, you’ll stop and view two of the UK’s best destinations. To start, you’ll take the A429 and rest along this road at Stratford-Upon-Avon, the birthplace of William Shakespeare. Go north on the A46, and then stop at the fantastic Warwick’s castle. Be sure to allow time to view the amazing cathedral in Coventry.

Day Four- From exiting your hotel in Coventry, head north on the M69 and then the M1. You can stop at the odd attraction of Chesterfield’s crooked spire. From here, go west to the small town of Bakewell, situated in the Peak District. An additional option is to travel north to the lively town of Sheffield, where you can find many excellent hotels.

5th Day- Keep going north via the M1 until you pass Leeds. From a quick stop there, get on the A64. This will bring you to the classic town of York, where you could enjoy shopping in the complex streets with old fashioned shops, have a look at the Minister and walk along the ancient city walls. York has a wonderful park-and-ride service for visitors, as the city really doesn’t give a lot in the way of parking spaces. If you’ve still got some daylight, you might head northeast up to Pickering, well-known for its North York Motors steam railway which you can ride. Otherwise, you can stay at any of the wonderful hotels in York.

6th Day- Now, you’ll be getting to the coast. Drive on the A170 and you’ll come to Scarborough, a rustic fishing town smack bang on the coast. Scarborough contains an old castle that’s right at the headlands, and this is an ideal area to hold up for a seafood lunch. Take the A171 and soon you’ll get to the amazing cliffside city of Robin’s Hood Bay. Sleep at one of the sweet quaint hotels at the hill’s top; the lanes at the sea level are very narrow, so driving down there is not recommended.

Day Seven- Stay on the A171 by the coast and you’ll come to the town of Whitby. It’s an attractive town with a busy harbor, little side streets along with an old gothic abbey. You’ve reached the end of your trip! Now, you can drop your car off at the local franchise of the car rental agency, or take the drive back to Brighton and enjoy the scenery on the way back!
